$17.9 billion budget approved

The 2010 session of the Georgia General Assembly came to an end late in the evening on April 29, several hours after lawmakers finalized a $17.9 billion state budget for fiscal year 2011. Having started Jan. 11, this was the longest legislative session on record since the 1880s.


Legislators reach agreement on transportation funding

After three years of trying to reach agreement on a solution to the state’s transportation funding problems, the House of Representatives and the Senate gave final approval to HB 277 on April 21.


House budget reduces spending

On April 14, the House approved a $17.8 billion state budget for fiscal year 2011. Under HB 948, state spending would be reduced by nearly $400 million from Gov. Perdue’s original proposal of $18.2 billion because of the recession’s impact on revenue collection.
Hospital fee’s future uncertain after Senate amendment

Like the House of Representatives did a week earlier, the Senate voted April 1 to approve Gov. Perdue’s proposal for a 1.45 percent “bed tax” increase on Georgia hospitals, a plan that would bring in approximately $169 million in new tax revenue in an effort to offset the state’s Medicaid deficit. The Senate amended HB 307 to repeal the state’s insurance premium tax sometime in the future when the state’s reserve fund exceeds $500 million.


House approves school funding

On March 26, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to approve legislation I introduced as an effort to assist our local school systems with their budget problems during these difficult economic times.
