NOTE: You may want to arrive a little early for this rivalry! The Metter Tigers are 9-0, ranked number one in the state, and just secured their second consecutive region championship. A win this Friday over long-time rival ECI would be the icing on the cake. The Tigers will travel to Twin City to take on the Emanuel County Institute Bulldogs for the 82nd time. That is the most games Metter has played against any opponent.
Make no mistake, for the very same reasons listed above, ECI will be looking to pull the upset over Metter as a consolation prize of sorts for their disappointing season.
ECI is 5-4 on the season and 3-3 in region play. They beat Portal, Claxton and Bryan County and lost against Screven County, McIntosh County and Jenkins County.
The all-time series stands at 39-41-1 in favor of ECI, but Head Coach Rodney Garvin has had their number.
Coach Garvin has beaten ECI both times he has faced them. Metter won 14-13 in 2018 and 21-7 last season. Prior to Metter’s recent success, ECI had dominated the series.
ECI is under the leadership of Head Coach Chris Kearson. Coach Kearson has been at the helm for ECI since 2011 and he has had tremendous success with the program.
Kearson is 87-31 as the Bulldogs’ head man, and ECI has made the playoffs every year under him. They have four region championships under his leadership and won the Class A state championship in 2012.
Make the short drive up Highway 23 to cheer on your Tigers in hopes of a perfect regular season. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
