About Us

The Metter Advertiser was first published in 1912 when the citizens of Metter, Georgia, began their efforts to form their own county.

At that time, Metter was part of the much larger Bulloch County. Community leaders decided the best way to get their voice heard in the General Assembly was to start a newspaper, so the City of Metter became the first – and possibly the only – municipality ever in the history of America to own its own newspaper.

After copies of the weekly newspaper were mailed to every Senator and Representative in the state for a period of time, the venture paid off and Candler County was formed. The paper was then sold to a private owner and continued to thrive. In 1977, the mother and son team of Virginia and Carvy Snell purchased The Metter Advertiser. The Snells carried on the rich heritage of the newspaper, and today, under the guidance of Publisher Carvy Snell and his staff, The Metter Advertiser continues to serve as your only source of local news for Metter and Candler County.

The Metter Advertiser, along with Metter Graphics, is owned by Snell Publications, Inc., a Georgia corporation.
