A bank bag containing an undisclosed amount of money was reportedly stolen from Candler County Tax Commissioner’s office on Thursday, Aug. 6.

Candler County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the theft on Friday, Aug. 7, at 9:30 a.m. Reports indicate that the bag was believed to have gone missing at some point from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday.

According to County Attorney Kendall Gross, the bag contained a mixture of cash and checks.

“The Tax Commissioner’s Office is currently contacting individuals now who paid by check to have them re-issue the checks,” Gross said.  “The county will pay related ‘stop payment’ fees.”

Cash payments had already been credited to accounts, Gross added.

The case was turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Calls to the GBI office on Monday were not returned as of press time on Tuesday.
