A woman sustained serious burns over a significant portion of her body in an early Sunday fire on Stockinghead Road. She was transferred to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta for treatment.

According to Candler County Sheriff’s Captain Justin Wells, details of the case are sketchy as of press time.

“A deputy was called to the location,” Wells said. “The responding deputy arrived to the fire and helped put the fire out.” Metter Fire & Rescue was also called to the scene.

Wells said on Monday that at the present time, it is unclear if the woman was a victim of a structure fire or if the woman was actually the target of an arson.

“We do have a person of interest,” Wells said, “and we are in the process of interviewing witnesses to get a clearer picture of what occurred. We are actively investigating the case and the circumstances surrounding it.”

Anyone having any information on this case is asked to contact Candler County Sheriff’s Office, 912-685-2568.
