Metter City Council approved the high bid of $63,995 by P & H Supply for a pothole excavator trailer for the water department during their Feb. 8 meeting.
Public Works Director Cliff Hendrix explained that the equipment serves as a vacuum of sorts to remove dirt without disrupting fiber optic and natural gas lines.
Many tasks that this equipment will be used for were previously handled with a backhoe, Hendrix said, which can run the risk of cutting into these utility lines.
“The biggest advantage is that you are not taking a chance of damage,” Hendrix said. “With the backhoe, you have a lot of power, and you have to be careful. This (equipment) will not burst a water line or damage a gas line.”
The equipment has another function as well, he said, stating that it can be used for cleaning out pump stations and storm drain boxes.
In other business, Council approved a retail alcoholic beverage license for off-premise consumption of beer and wine submitted by Cody Glenn Ellison of behalf of Food Lion LLC.
Council also authorized Mayor Ed Boyd to handle particulars in the financial arrangement with GMA for the purchase of a 2021 Ford Explorer with equipment for use by Metter Police Department.
