The Metter Middle School Lady Tigers Basketball Team won the Southeast Georgia Middle School League Region Championship on Feb. 6.

The girls entered the region plays as the #1 North Girls Team. They opened the first round of playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 3, against Claxton’s Lady Tigers. Metter started the game on a 25-1 run, which was also the score at the end of the 1st quarter.

Metter went on to defeat Claxton by a final score of 48-10. Kyah Byrd and Chelsea Hewitt led Metter’s scoring effort with 13 points each. Zion Saffore scored 12 in the win.

In the semi-final round, Metter had its third match-up against Toombs County. Unlike the previous two games in which Toombs emerged as the winner, the Lady Tigers took the win in this contest.

Metter’s scrappy defense and full-court fast breaks proved too much for the Lady Pups, as the Lady Tigers went on to win by a final score of 43-29. Zion Saffore led Metter with a game-high 18 points, while Zyah Byrd tossed in 15 points in the win.

In the championship game, it was Metter over Bryan County by a final score of 31-24. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead. However, the third quarter was filled with turnovers and foul trouble for Metter. During this time, Bryan County went on a 12-4 run to pull within 3.

In the fourth quarter, however, it was all Metter. With tough defense, the Lady Tigers were able to hold off and defeat the Lady Redskins to win the championship.

Zion Saffore led all scorers with 12 points en route to the championship and Metter’s 12-2 overall record.

A stellar regular season

The girls ended their regular season with a 9-2 record, with their only two losses coming at the hands of Toombs County by a combined score of 5 points. Metter averaged 38 points per game while only allowing their opponents an average of 19 points.
