The high speed chase that ended with a crash at the I-16 interchange in Metter made national television. Last week, Live PD on A & E covered the harrowing chase that began in Treutlen County on May 24 and continued into Candler County. The suspect crashed into an unoccupied Metter PD vehicle, causing the vehicle to roll down an embankment. Preliminary estimates of the relatively new vehicle have damages in the $30,000-range, although it is possible the cruiser may be totaled out. The city is waiting on word from the insurance adjustor regarding the status of the vehicle, Chief Rob Shore told council on Monday evening. The chase began as a traffic stop in Treutlen County. The passenger in the car, Cornelius Roberts, 27, of Sylvania, then jumped into the driver’s seat, and the chase began. A Georgia State Patrolman was injured during the chase as he attempted to deploy spike strips. Spike strips were then deployed at the off-ramp of I-16, which led to the Ford Fusion crashing into the Metter Police vehicle and into a pole. The suspect then attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended in the multi-agency effort.
