On Thursday, May 21, the Candler County Board of Education met for the May regular board meeting. During that meeting, Superintendent Dr. Bubba Longgrear announced that he is hopeful school will be back in session by August 3.
Due to the constrictions on travel and social gathering, Longgrear reported that there were no recognitions for this month but that the board would recognize deserving individuals and groups when they are able.
Following the opening of the meeting, the board approved the financial reports for the General Fund and School Nutrition Program.
Next, the board discussed action items. April’s board minutes were approved by the board, and a discussion about the FY20-21 tentative budget began.
The members of the board approved the FY20-21 tentative budget. It will be advertised in the paper, and there will be two public hearings before it is finalized.
The first public hearing for the FY20-21 budget will be on June 2 at 5 p.m. in the board room on 210 S. College St. The second will occur concurrently with the Board of Education June Workshop, which will be on June 23 at 8 a.m. in the PreK-8 School Bigwood Room.
The final hearing will be during the regular monthly board meeting on June 25 at 5 p.m.
The meeting closed with Dr. Longgrear’s superintendent comments.
He highlighted all the struggles students, staff, and teachers have had to overcome during the COVID-19 quarantine and subsequent school closings, and he wrapped up by laying out what new things will be coming in the next school year. He also commented that he is hopeful that school will be back in session by August 3.
