“These parents are ready to play ball!”
And with those words, Mike Robins, director of Metter-Candler Recreation Department, asked commissioners for guidance regarding a fall sports season.
While some communities have opted out of recreational sports this fall because of the COVID pandemic, Robins told commissioners at the Sept. 14 meeting, “I just know our community, right now, really wants football.
“I do think our numbers will be down a little bit, but I really think we should offer it.”
Robins said that parents will be required to sign a special COVID waiver and social distancing protocols will be followed.
“I can’t be the COVID police,” he said, “but I think the more things we do to make sure people know we are trying, I think that’s a good step ahead.”
Commissioners agreed to open up the department for fall sports, including softball; football; flag football for ages 5-6; and cheer and soccer for ages 4-12.
Sign-up is now underway at the recreation department and will continue through this week.
Parents can sign their children up from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. any weekday or from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26.
Registration fee is $40 per child, $50 for football for ages 7-12.
