Truck driver dies of heart attack during wreck

Danny Beckworthy's overturned truck.

A Savannah man died on Wednesday, Dec. 14, during a crash involving his semi-trailer and the Clifton’s sign on South Lewis Street.

According to Georgia State Patrol reports, Danny Beckworth, 51, was traveling north on S. Lewis St. in a 2007 Peterbilt semi when he left the roadway and traveled on the east shoulder about 160 feet before overturning. The cargo container behind the semi struck the Clifton’s sign, causing it to fall over. The semi and trailer came to a rest in the parking area of Clifton’s.

Emergency response crews immediately began efforts to revive the driver. Medical personnel determined that his death was not related to the crash but was a possible heart attack prior to the accident.
