The 2020-2021 school year was an exciting one for Metter Tiger athletics!
A few Metter High highlights:
• 2021 Class A State Baseball Champs
• Individual State Champion Track in Triple Jump, Fernandez Burke
• Boys and Girls in Top 5 in Individual State Track
• State Runners up Boys Golf
• Semi Finals Football
And the Metter Middle School Girls Basketball Team was region champs!
“We also were second place overall in the state in best boys athletic program in single A behind Commerce and in the top 10 in the Girls division,” said Lisa Longgrear, MMS/MHS Booster Club secretary. “Let’s do it all again.”
With that being said, it is Booster Drive time. This year, the Boosters are being headed by Scott Glanton, president; Brian Tootle, vice-president; and Lisa Longgrear, secretary.
“We have a rich history of significant fundraising for our MMS/MHS athletic programs through our booster club,” Longgrear continued. “Last year’s team effort raised over $68,000 in cash! This year our goal is to reach $75,000! Every dollar raised enhances our MMS and MHS athletic programs and ultimately our community.”
Memberships are vital to the success of athletic programs at MMS and MHS. Without the boosters, the sports programs have to rely primarily on their gate receipts for funding. Many of those sports have little to no gate receipts, although these non-revenue sports also have expenses.
No local or state tax dollars are allotted for sports, and with no booster funding, the schools would have to look at student fees to fund the sports.
The membership drive is now underway. Forms can be found in this week’s paper or online, through the daily Good Morning, Metter! enewsletter or at www.metteradvertiser.com.
Memberships are due by Friday, August 6, in order to receive benefits by the first football game. Membership will become active the date the form and fee are received.
