Tigers to host first round of state

Remember to buy your tickets before the game!

This Friday night the Metter Tigers will welcome the Turner County Rebels into the Jungle for the first round of the state playoffs.

Metter finished the regular season 10-0, ranked number one in the state in Class A football, and they took home a region championship. But they are far from done. Now the mission will be to go 5-0 in the playoffs in hopes of bringing home a state championship. Turner County will certainly be looking to dash all those hopes Friday night.

Turner County finished their season with a 6-4 record and they were 3-3 in a very tough Region 2-A.

Their four losses came against very quality opponents. Their first loss was against Fitzgerald, who finished the season undefeated and ranked number one in AA football. Turner County’s three region losses came against Clinch County, Brooks County and Irwin County. All three of those teams are ranked in the top ten at numbers nine, three and five respectively.

Turner County is led on the field by sophomore quarterback Amarion Blanks. Blanks is a six foot tall left hander that throws the ball well and will run it from time to time. He has 1,489 yards passing on the season and has thrown 12 touchdown passes.

Their leading rusher is Elijah Stephens. Stephens has 970 yards rushing and has scored 16 touchdowns.

Their head coach Kevious Johnson is in his first season.

Other teams representing Region 3-A in the state playoffs are McIntosh County Academy, Claxton and Jenkins County. MCA will take on Clinch County, Claxton will face Brooks County and Jenkins County will duke it out with Irwin County.

As you enjoy your Thanksgiving Day with family and friends, be sure to save some room for a little Tiger football on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
