The annual Veterans Day Program will be held on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Courthouse lawn, weather permitting. In the event of bad weather, the program will be moved to Anchor Worship Center.

Dixie Odom will give the welcome and introduce the speaker, Teri Shewmaker, daughter of Lt. Col. H.W. Shewmaker, USAF. 

The Metter High JROTC will provide a Color Guard for the posting and retirement of the colors and lead in the Pledge of Allegiance. Performances will be provided by the Metter High and Metter Elementary School choruses and the Metter High band. Sylvester Williams will perform “Taps.”

The event is sponsored by Metter VFW Post 5893 and American Legion Post 108.

The Candler County Branch NAACP will provide a free meal for veterans on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Bevricks. The program will include guest speaker Bro. Jonathan Paine. Paine was born and raised in Aberdeen, Mississippi. 

He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and the Worshipful Master of Truthful Masonic Lodge #375 of Portal. 

Paine joined the United States Army after high school and conducted his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and then went on to do his AIT at Fort Lee, Virginia. 

Paine’s duty stations were Fort Stewart with the 3rd infantry Division, Birmingham, Alabama, and Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He served 2 tours in Afghanistan and spends his days now continuing the mission of helping people through helping and supporting veterans. 

He has worked for Veterans Affairs and the Georgia Department of Labor helping veterans as a veteran representative. He is also a certified firefighter for Bulloch County.

There will be a short program with a special song selection by Rev. Jim O'Brien and Michele Green of “America the Beautiful.” The Master and Mistress of Ceremony will be the husband and wife duo of veterans Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kennedy.
